Blocked Toilet in Nottingham — Same-Day Unblocking

A blocked toilet is one of the most disruptive household problems — and usually one of the quickest to fix when you call someone who actually comes out the same day. We clear blocked toilets across Nottingham, including in Beeston's student HMOs, the Victorian terraces of Hyson Green and Radford, and throughout the suburbs. No call-out charge, fixed price before we start.

What Causes Blocked Toilets?

Wet wipes — including those labelled "flushable", which do not break down in drain systems — are the single most common cause of blocked toilets in Nottingham. Sanitary products, nappy liners, and excessive amounts of toilet paper compound the problem. In Nottingham's older clay-piped terraces and in Beeston's high-occupancy HMOs, partial blockages from years of incremental build-up are also frequent: the bore narrows gradually until a single flush tips it over into a complete block. In a small proportion of cases, a collapsed or misaligned pipe further downstream causes water to back up and manifests as a repeat toilet blockage even when nothing inappropriate has been flushed.

What Not to Do

Do not keep flushing a blocked toilet — the pan will overflow. Do not use chemical drain unblockers designed for sinks: they are formulated for grease and hair, rarely touch solid blockages in a toilet, and can cause long-term damage to older ceramic pans and the seals around them. A plunger is worth trying once or twice, but if it does not clear the blockage in two or three attempts, call us rather than continuing.

How We Clear It

Most blocked toilets clear in under an hour. We assess the blockage, use rods or high-pressure jetting depending on the location and nature of the obstruction, run a test flush, and confirm that the drain downstream is flowing freely. If the same toilet has blocked more than once in a short period, we will raise the question of whether a CCTV survey makes sense to find out why — rather than just clearing and leaving without investigation.

When a Blocked Toilet Signals a Bigger Problem

A toilet blockage that is isolated to a single fixture is one thing. But if sewage is backing up into the bath or shower when you flush, if multiple fixtures are affected simultaneously, or if you can hear gurgling from nearby drains when the toilet is flushed, the main drain is involved. That requires a different approach — see our blocked drains and emergency drainage pages for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you come today?
In most cases, yes. We aim to attend the same day for blocked toilet calls across Nottingham. For genuine emergencies — toilet overflowing or sewage backing up — we prioritise accordingly.
Why does my toilet keep blocking?
Repeat blockages often mean something is being flushed that shouldn't be, or there is a partial restriction in the drain below the toilet. If it's happening regularly, a CCTV survey will find the cause.
Is it the toilet or the drain?
If a plunger doesn't shift it, or if other fixtures are affected, it's likely in the drain rather than the toilet itself. We'll confirm on arrival.
How much does it cost?
We quote a fixed price on arrival, before starting. There is no call-out charge — you only pay for the work done.
